It’s strange, however, that it looks like the centurion’s worthiness, love, and works, are what motivate Jesus to follow. He is worthy to have you do this for him, for he loves our nation, and he is the one who built us our synagogue Luke 7:3-4Īfter saying this, Jesus and his entourage follow them. The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. When the Jewish leaders meet Jesus they beg Him to come to heal a servant on behalf of the centurion. We don’t know exactly how this centurion came to trust the God of the Israelites, but no doubt the miracle of his faith was a gift from God as well as the product of the community of his Jewish friends. Word must’ve gotten out that He was there because a Roman centurion sent Jewish leaders to find Jesus.Ĭenturions were Roman officers who were in charge of 100 soldiers, and it was very unlikely, bizarre even, to find one hanging out with Jewish leaders. To give you some context, Jesus had just finished His Sermon on the Mount and was passing through Capernaum. Jesus in CenturionĪfter he had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. Now a centurion had a servant who was sick and at the point of death, who was highly valued by him. Now, let’s dive deeper into each part of this story. Yet, we see him in this story putting all of his trust into Jesus. He should have been one of the last people to trust Jesus. This man was Gentile and a Roman soldier. The faith of the centurion is incredible in this story. When the friends returned, they found the servant was healed. Jesus proclaimed he had not found faith like the centurions in all of Israel. He still believed that if Jesus says the word his servant would be healed. The centurion said he is not worthy to have Jesus in his home.

They told Jesus to no longer bothering coming. These men were sent by the centurion again with a message. While Jesus was on his way to the home, more men came up to him. The centurion sent these elders to ask Jesus to come to his home and heal his servant. What is the story of Jesus and the Centurion? When Jesus entered Capernaum, some Jewish elders came to him and told him of a centurion’s servant who was ill. In Luke 7:1-10 (also found in Matthew 8:5-13) we see Jesus healing the servant of a faithful centurion.

The Gospels tell many miracles Jesus did while on earth.
